Business and Dental Marketing: Not Getting the Results

Note: Whether you are a dentist or a restaurant owner or a lawyer, being successful in your field is not about only mastering the skills needed in your profession. How about areas like sales, business or dental marketing?  You must invest time and money to learn all areas of management and marketing. 

 People who work the hardest don’t necessarily make the most money  . Why is that? Is this even true in the first place? After all, one has heard for eons that hard work will eventually pay off!  One has also heard that getting a good education can increase one’s chance of success. 

It is all true, but the hard-working people and the well-educated people who make it have other skills and qualities which are not being noticed  .  Please note that I am at this point and in this issue,  focusing on the area of being successful financially. 

 Let’s say you are a doctor  . Doctors have a great education and the observant patient  who gets a doctor visiting him in the hospital at odd hours knows that the doctor also works hard  . 

So, why are so many doctors considering themselves (despite the general and out-dated belief of the public)  not even close to where they would like to be financially as they have envisioned when they first enrolled in med school? 

Because they are greedy and have no shame on how much they want to make and only consider themselves poor but they are rich? No, not really. The doctors I know have quite moderate goals, which always include being a good doctor for their patients (which is hard work!!) They don’t mind the hard work , but  they think that someone as educated as they are should also get the better financial rewards. 

So let’s get to the fundamentals of why industrious and successful people do not necessarily reap the benefits of such valuable commodities.

The world has changed and  there are many elements which one cannot alter or control.  Yes, times have changed but you have not!!   You did not notice the change and did not adjust  . Well, in truth the correct thing to say is, you did adjust to the situation – you ‘accept’ the changes as what they are and convince yourself to get used to having less than your intended goals.   

Hmm – great adjustment, but this is not the ‘adjustment’ I am referring to  . I am talking about adjusting the skills needed to handle the “changing times.” Once you have the skills to handle the environment and the change of times, then you will not have to adjust yourself to the new times, but will adjust the times, situations, and the environment to you instead!!

For example,  any good cook in the world knows that to have a nice Thanksgiving dinner, he or she needs to put the seasoned turkey in the oven first, and then work on the other side dishes in order to have a nice turkey dinner and this sequence does not change no matter where you are in the world.  

It takes more than just knowing how to season and cook the food just right.  It takes timing of actions.  It takes knowing what efforts it will take to do any given task!  Hell, it even takes knowing what food certain people might prefer depending on the day or season. The knowledge goes way beyond just cooking. 

Many well educated and hardworking professionals think that what they know about the specific profession should be enough. Working smarter, not harder, only means spreading out your knowledge base into the remaining areas of your life.

In other words, a business person or doctor in private practice (or any other hard working and well-educated person) better learn a wide range of other stuff , especially if he or she finds themselves not getting to their original goals as fast as they want to. Dentists who are only good in dental procedures  but not in dental practice management will find themselves working very hard till old age but will never be satisfied by their income level. 

There is no substitute for knowing one’s way around the labyrinth of business. Business or management skills include marketing, advertising, public relations and human resources knowledge. The simple knowledge of  what kind of marketing to do is as important as being a good doctor. 

In fact, something widely underestimated is the time and effort it takes to create customers, patients, or clients.  Assumption and hearsay, and what one thinks it should take to create patients (or what it did take), are used instead of new and up-to-date knowledge, or simply a good look at what it actually does take. 

If customers are not coming to you in the amount you want, you have underestimated the effort it takes, and that you have not done enough correct actions in your practice. You are not supporting those actions with other marketing activities. You HAVE to increase your expertise in the marketing and management areas and then do what needs to be done!  Here is something that you might not have considered: the most money lost is not the money that you have wasted but the money you have not made. 

There are other corners of knowledge one has to stick his nose into , such as how to hire and train employees, why they leave, and how to make hiring a non-tedious action. 

Not having enough knowledge to master such things usually paralyzes any organization and makes them overworked and underpaid.

But as with our chef who planned the turkey dinner accordingly, if a business owner does not start learning how to use any and all ways of marketing, one will have a dry, somewhat stale, unpalatable financial life. 

It does not matter how experienced you are in perhaps the otherwise most important areas of life!! Just look at all those overworked underpaid doctors. It will matter less and less and less every year from now on.  The economic recession of today challenges the most ‘experienced’ professional — is he or she skillful also in other needed areas of his or her business?  . 

You see, there is a huge difference between “knowing about” and “knowing enough” to actually use such knowledge to one’s advantage. Implementation, or the lack of implementation, has everything to do with enough knowledge on the subject or not enough knowledge on the subject.

So, go and get it. Start looking for this knowledge in all places– take classes, associate yourself with gurus and, yes, do not mind paying money to those people. 

Remember: It isn’t all about what you already know in your profession. It is about learning and constantly sharpening your skills in business management, sales, marketing and even learning the latest high tech tools. For eg, a dentist must learn everything he can about the internet to stay competitive in his dental advertising or his business might just be wiped out by the next tech-savvy competitor in his area. This applies to all professions.

I used to work with a guy who had a behavior of stopping whatever we were doing or trying to accomplish to do seemingly petty tasks.  For example, one day when we were working on a very enjoyable project, the breaker for the electrical panel that controls our coffee maker tripped and cut the power off.  After a fast examination I soon located the breaker panel and began to manually turn each one off and on while my affiliate watched the coffee pot until the lights came on yet again.  After we located the offending breaker and our coffee was brewing again, I thought we could now go back to the venture that was interrupted.

I was incorrect.  More incorrect than I imagined.

The first thing that my partner did was haul me back to the electrical panel to point out to him the breaker that had tripped.  Then he had me keep my finger near the panel while he went to locate a label and a marker.  Then he had me turn off the breaker while he went over with a lamp and checked each of the plugs in the area of the coffee maker to determine which ones were tied to the breaker that tripped.  Then he carefully labeled the breaker with a description of the plugs it was managing.

All of this was driving me bonkers!  It took me Much less than a minute to throw the breaker, and he had made this a twenty minute challenge!  I finally demanded that he tell me why we were playing around with this, instead of doing the important things at hand.

“Time administration”, he replied. 

I was at a loss!  If he called that time administration then I was a monkey’s uncle.  I was thinking that maybe my pal was crazy or at the very least had a very twisted view of time administration.  I had heard others complain about the way that my good friend did things, and they were correct.  I demanded to know how we could suspend a very essential challenge to spend twenty minutes labeling a breaker.

“Well”, he responded, “By the time we reset all the digital clocks that are tied to that circuit breaker panel, the time we already spent resetting the timer and coffee maker and waiting for the photocopier to warm up we could have spent twenty minutes anyway.  Now if that breaker trips again, I only have to reset the coffee maker because I won’t have to throw all the breakers to find this one.  The breaker only has to trip one more time for me to get back the investment of time that we just put in, and I may be on my own which would take me even additional time.  On top of that we were ready for a break from our function anyway, and we had that break and got something else accomplished.”

“I once took a timer”, he proceeded “And counted for an entire week where I was spending my time.  It was a real eye opener.  In one week I invested one full hour looking for my automobile keys.  They were on thedesk, in another pair of pants, below some papers.  That means in one year I was investing fifty two hours just searching for my keys!  That is one complete weekend Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday with no sleep just hunting for my keys!  I have far better ways to commit my spare time than hunting for keys.  Or to put into work conditions, I desire to make $50/hour at the work that I do, so if I had worked those fifty two hours I would have made two thousand six hundred dollars. “

The lesson here is distinct.  Mygood friend recognized what it meant to have items holding him back from doing the vital things in his life, and he took the time to make certain that he eliminated those things that were keeping him back.  By making a habit of prevention, the crisis become so little that they can be dealt with with simplicity.

 

US Government is Going Paperless

Despite progress in technology, the government still relies on direct mail when sending checks to their beneficiaries. This procedure is tied up with how most banks can release funds to its recipients. There are a few downsides with this process which involve lost checks and postponed payment due to courier timelines.

In addition to these reasons, the government has a better reason for changing the way funds are issued to its beneficiaries. The US government chose to send checks electronically. This will make up the beneficiaries who previously applied for Social Security and other institutions by the first of May next year will be able to receive their checks electronically, directly deposited into their bank or federal credit union. The statement was given by the US Treasury Department last Tuesday.

Beneficiaries who have previously received their checks will need to find a way to receive their checks electronically by the first of March in 2013. Officials from the Treasury Department said that there are already eight out of ten benefit recipients are already using electronic sending of benefits. Other beneficiaries will start receiving their money through a safe and reliable method using electronic funds transfer.

With this process completely implemented, government beneficiaries will start receiving the benefits of timely funds transfer. Simply because it will be more convenient to receive checks as soon as possible into your account rather than through mail.

Perhaps most importantly, this initiative will also help the government save significant amount of money which will in turn benefit the taxpayers. They will no longer be obliged to pay for the $120 million annual budget established for paper checks. It will also save one billion dollars for Social Security for 10 years.

Of course, because this new process, a new problem is presented. Considering that most of the beneficiaries are elderly, the concern of misunderstanding the process maybe expected. This concern has been anticipated by the government so an education awareness campaign is scheduled to be launched to facilitate help to beneficiaries making the transition more simple.

One of the buying points that the national government exhibited when promoting the new procedure is focused on reiterating the switch to paperless checks will be advantageous to its beneficiaries. Officials said that after the switch is on full blast, it will remove concerns of missed checks and thus providing timely access to the benefits received.
