How Mad Men May Influence What’s Worn To Work

Following the fantastic success of the American TV show Mad Men, are we to see the reappearance of smarter clothes being worn in the city?  If so, I feel it’s not before time.  The casual dress code adopted by some city companies has prompted many improper choices of clothes for the office. Flip flops, plunging necklines and bare midriffs are surely sights best kept for weekends and holidays ladies.  The same applies to combat trousers and denim gentlemen!

The businessman of the 1950s dressed conservatively in a flannel suit. Fabric colours of the day tended to be dark blue, dark brown or charcoal . The office junior would dress in a similar way  to the company head.  Office fashion followed that of the American way with wide legged ‘peg’ trousers, shorter jackets and single breasted jackets. Shirt collars were small and neat and tie widths slim.  Hats with narrow brims were worn by most men. In the early sixties, men were to be seen  wearing smart, hand finished Italian suits were now in vogue along with a jauntily worn smart hat to the office.

Working ladies of the 1950s  wore dark coloured suits at their office desks. Jackets would be short  with a fitted waistband . Skirts mostly would be fitted or in a ‘pencil’ style, knee length and narrow, taking wide strides was not an option . This created the effect of a very alluring (for the men) wiggle as the ladies walked around  the office! Ladies’ shoes also made small steps a necessity . High heels and pointed toes could make walking a challenge .  To make up for the dour colouring of office clothes, brightly coloured jewelry and accessories were worn.

Looking forward to the Mad Men influence impacting office wear trends soon!

Have you seen in recent years, that the number of electronic displays everywhere you go that display info, communications, or advertising is rising at a very rapid pace. These electronic displays are known as digital signage. These digital signs are the most recent technological wave that can be seen in both public and private environments, like in restaurants, hotels, billboards, and corporate buildings.

While the term, digital signage, is fairly famous all through the world, it is in addition known under various other terms including narrowcasting, screen media, digital media networks, and digital merchandising to name a few. Digital signage can be employed to serve a number of purposes:

Public Details
Getting information out to the populace is a common use for digital signage. Information like news and weather, gas prices, and air quality are a few examples. It likewise has a favorite use for location specific info such as traveler details or where fire exits are situated inside structures.

Advertising
Pretty self explanatory here. Digital signage can be used to advertise a retail store’s newest clothes line, hottest sales, or for simple brand building. Digital signage is ideal for advertising since a establishments content can be switched easily versus a static sign. Digital signage also allows for animations to be shown and the digital displays can be speedily changed and adapted for the context and audience that will be viewing them. For example, if school is about to start, the signs can be used for “Back to School” sales. If it is close to Mother’s Day, the panels can be changed to show items that would make great gifts for Mother.

Internal Details
More and more companies are utilizing digital signage to convey important info such as corporate news and communications, health and safety related items, or upcoming events. The signs can also be carried over to a local level to give scheduling information for important conferences, meetings, or even the lunchroom menus of the local coffeehouse.

Enhancing the Customer Experience
Digital signage in Houston is gathering popularity in numerous of their restaurants and businesses where the application is to raise a customer’s experience. As an example, the signage can be used to reduce a patron’s perceived wait time while they’re in the waiting area before being seated for a meal. Digital signage can also be used for demonstrations. As an example, in a hardware warehouse, the screen media might show a demonstration on how to rehab a lavatory or how to paint.

So how does digital signage work? It essentially boils down to displaying content on screens, whether the screens use LEDs, an LCD ( liquid crystal display), or even a plasma screen display. The content used can be pretty well anything from words, to video, to animations, to visuals that require an audience to interact with it. The fundamental thing to realize about digital signage is that it relies upon good content to work efficiently. Digital signage is a better established technology and as more and more marketers and users adjust to digital signage, they will produce content which is engaging and informational to the listeners and in all likelihood, put a finish to static signs.

The First Five Percent of Strategic Change Management

I wrote before about the “First Five Percent. That’s my approach to strategic change management that says the quality of the first five percent determines what happens in the rest of the process.

I was in Los Angeles last week, working with a large association, on a strategic plan for their organization. It was the beginning of a year-long process to create a high-performing organization. One of the practices of the First Five Percent is to allow as many persons to participate as early as possible.. You never know who may have an excellent idea. Exposing more members at the very beginning, will enable you discover the choicest brain power and latent intellegence as past as possible..

There were 300 people in the room, including local officers, chapter leaders, and board members. The program can be changed.. I was prepared to go in different directions, depending on the first exercise, to assure high levels of participation. The first question I posed was this: âThink about where you want the association to be in two years. Tell me the specific changes you want to see and your measures of success.

They worked on this question for 60 minutes and wrote down their responses on flip chart paper. Each team made a presentation afterwards.. I then asked them: What did you hear yourselves say? Was there an accord?

Everyone called out what they heard. “Recruit more members.” “Fill our vacancies,” “Create a new business line.”Their juices were flowing.”

“How would someone judge success.”?I asked. They shouted out what they’d heard. I lised 4 exact measures of success. I called upon the group if they are one in mind.. Everyone raised their hands.

They took a break for lunch. I planned my next step, while the room was silent.. I scanned their position papers, and realized that it will not be hard to mine their intensesity.. I indexed 12 goals in my catalogue. The aims touched on subjects in relation to “recruit more members” or ” escalate our presence in the political arena..â I posted these goals on the walls of the room. When they came back from lunch, I said: âTake a look around the room. These are yur targets. Find a goal you feel passionate about. Go stand by that goal. If you feel passionate about another goal not listed, there are blank pieces of paper.â

The group divided itself into teams around each goal. I required every group to execute a procedure for every goal to be followed by a demonstration.. During the report-outs, I identified key issues that needed to be resolved and facilitated a discussion around each issue. When people drifted off topic, I invoked the two-minute rule (âAnything important can be said in two minutesâ) and they got back on course. We wrapped it up at 4 p.m.

Then I asked what they liked about the meeting. “It was energizing,” someone said. “Excellent ideas!” A lot of people made obervations. ” Your conduct,” somebody said. “The two minute axiom!” ” a few shouted. “We’re excited to be building our organization,” a woman said.

“And what is it you would like to change?” I enquired.

So we have to go away!” a man shouted. Everyone laughed.

Financial organizations: time for change

Many people and organizations are still pulling through the credit crunch. The wrongdoers : banks and other financial organizations.
What would the general organizational culture be in financial organizations? We calculated the profiles for the Dutch financial sector: a results-oriented line of work indeed with more focus on people than imagined and a sound desire for a reduced amount of performance and a higher amount of innovation. But should we endorse that ?

About the Assessment

The Organizational Cultural Assessment Instrument (OCAI) was finished near September 2009 by more than 130 respondents. They all work in the industry group Financial and insurance activities.
The OCAI measures the results on four culture types: Clan culture, Adhocracy culture, Market culture, and Hierarchy culture. Check out the OCAI model for more information or take the test yourself: OCAI One.

Profits and productivity

In the present financial culture, the results-oriented market culture is number one (27,68 out of 100 points) . This culture values winning, reputation, competition, and achieving goals and targets.
Most people who commented on the assessment recognize this: a “work hard, play hard” culture with huge bonuses and a board of directors consisting of successful males that are all highly determined and dominant. Indeed, revenue and productivity rule. It’s this share that got a lot of media coverage and that is judged as having caused the credit crunch.

Concern for people and procedures

But this is only part of the picture . The actual profile is way more at balance with hierarchy culture counting for 27,30 points. This culture type cares for control, structure, careful preparation, clear procedures and efficiency, standardized rules, and stability.

Also, clan culture scores 25,23 points. This people-oriented culture is open and sociable .
Least prominent in the present culture is adhocracy: 19,78 points. The financial sector is least a dynamic, entrepreneurial, and creative workplace right now. Though some eminent bankers have been proven to be very inventive with numbers.

Less performance and more innovation please

As can be seen in the profiles below, the red current profile reveals a pattern focused on results and structure.

Compare this profile with the blue preferred profile and we find an interesting discrepancy.

Financials desire an upward shift to more flexibility. Adhocracy culture increases 11.7 points and hierarchy culture decreases 9 points.
With a difference of 10 points or more, it’s often vital to take action. These scores illustrate dissatisfaction or readiness to change, and you can see them as a call to action.

More innovation: desirable?

Both managers and employees favor the flexibility and dynamics of adhocracy culture that values initiatives, professional freedom, experimenting, and so on. As long as you innovate and deliver quality, it’s OK .

It may be reasonable that they want this. But should we approve this culture type for our financial institutions? It looks as if banks have been too innovative already, creating financial constructions that no one could control , and taking too much risk.

We could also claim that a new method of working is desirable in the financial sector. Another culture type could become a fit focus point for the future with less concentration on profits and money. Some European Banks began working on a culture that takes ethical issues into account, a working climate that develops dialogue and tolerates critical thinking.

It’s a fascinating process. The financial professionals that we interviewed in the Netherlands acknowledge the current and preferred culture. They see the call for more adhocracy culture coming from employees who have little space to breathe and sometimes feel crushedby their output targets and a flood of procedures. All say that the sector is very conservative and does not have good, let alone inspirational leadership in many places. So, perhaps, it’s time for innovation indeed.

LTO5 Backup Drives and Media Released

Sony has declared that its LTO-5 tape cartridges have been approved by the LTO Consortium. Sony’s new LTO-5 tape cartridge has two specific features: A super-fine metal particle which allows for more stable read/write capabilities, and also a binder system with cross-linking and abrasion-resistance, for a more long-wearing magnetic layer.

All the released LTO-5 products have the same specifications: native 1.5TB capacity (3gb with 2:1 compression) and up to 140MB/s transfer rate, AES 256-bit encryption, dual partitioning, read/write compatibility with LTO-4 and read-only compatibility with LTO-3.

The LTO consortium is headed up by IBM, HP & Quantum. Maxell, Fuji Sony and Imation are part of the consortium and are licenced to product the tape media. Strangely Maxell so far hasn’t announced any LTO5 products.~Linear Tape-Open (LTO) technology was developed jointly by HP, IBM and Quantum to provide a clear and viable choice in an increasingly complex array of tape storage options.

Ultrium LTO technology is an “open format” technology, which means that customers will have a choice of supplier of product and tapes. The “open” nature of LTO Ultrium technology also allows a means of enabling compatibility between different suppliers’ products. The Ultrium format is the “high capacity” implementation of LTO technology.  It is ideally suited for backup, restore and archive applications and provides excellent performance and capacity in both stand-alone and automated environments.

The Ultrium format is the preferred format when capacity and high streaming data rates are the primary storage consideration. With clear and straightforward technology roadmaps and industry support worldwide, the LTO Ultrium format benefits users by offering multiple sources of product and media, as well as compatibility between products from different vendors.

The newly-introduced Ultrium format generation 5 allows for up to 3TB capacity (assuming 2:1 compression) and also includes a new partitioning functionality, enabling capabilities that can enhance file control and space management, addressing the growing needs of marketplace segments such as Rich Media.

The LTO roadmap continues with the proposed LTO-6 “Next Generation” which would offer 3.2TB native capacity and 270MB/sec transfer speed.~All the released LTO-5 products have the same specifications: native 1.5TB capacity (3gb with 2:1 compression) and up to 140MB/s transfer rate, AES 256-bit encryption, dual partitioning, read/write compatibility with LTO-4 and read-only compatibility with LTO-3. The LTO roadmap continues with the proposed LTO-6 “Next Generation” which would offer 3.2TB native capacity and 270MB/sec transfer speed.

IBM and Fujitsu have suggested that they have created technology that could lead to 35TB backup media. Given that each LTO technology has doubled the capacity that would indicate several more generations way into the future.

Also, with the effective retirement of the main competition – Quantum’s DLT & SDLT and Sony’s AIT – the LTO technology is the only realistic way forward for tape backups.

However, many customers are moving away from from tape backups to disk based products which are already available in 1-2TB sizes, so the future isn’t inevitably healthy for the LTO technology.

End Tab File Folders, The Way To File

Posted in Uncategorized with a total of No comments

Options(21)’>Shelf filing systems can be a great solution for organizing paperwork or encounters. They can be used by both large organizations and single individuals. In addition, they are considerably accessible and can be set up almost anywhere. However, they do require a special type of folder, known as End Tab File Folders. These folders have the label tabs at the sides rather than the tops, allowing them to be placed right side up on shelves while still keeping the tabs visible. They can be bought on the Internet as well as at many different office supply stores.

For some people, one filing target within a folder is not enough. They may need to subdivide their categories, or they may have smaller papers, mementos, or tags to add to their files. But even in these cases, people can use End Tab File Folders. Some folders have inner pockets, while others have attached end tab folders with fasteners. There are also folders with one, two, or three dividers in them, some of which also contain fasteners. In some cases, it is even possible to buy folders with envelopes or wallet dividers. So even those with very large or complicated files can use End Tab File Folders

A file folder’s tabs are used in a measure of different ways. Sometimes, people write a single word on them, while at other times they hold complicated color coded labels. In some cases they may be rarely touched, but other times they are used often to pull files in and out. Because of this, End Tab File Folders have different types of tabs. Some of them are only one layer, while others are heavily reinforced. Some tabs are only small, but others extend all the way to the top of the folder. There are even tabs with pre-printed color-coded labels. For any type of a situation, there is a tab that is perfect.

People put many sizes and types of files in their folders. As a result, many End Tab File Folders have been created to hold larger files. Some of them expand using gussets and w-shaped folds. This can, in some cases, allow them to hold up to two inches of material, including things that are thick and bulky. In addition, not all of them contain just one compartment. Some are spaced into sections with dividers, and others have pockets or envelopes. This makes End Tab File Folders perfect for any size of project.
